Test-it

An app for managing the Israeli yearly car test

A UX case study

Overview

Many drivers in Israel describe the yearly car test to be stressful, time consuming, and an unpleasent experience overall.  My goal in this project was to improve this experience by designing an app that allows drivers to keep track of tests and guides them through the process: before, during, and after the test. The app would serve the test center as well, helping testers to run the line of cars and manage documentation.

Initial Thinking

Target users

  • Drivers

  • Testers

  • Test center management

For this personal project my focus was on drivers

"How might we"?

  • How might we decrease the stress for new and for experienced drivers?

  • How might we shorten the test process for users?

  • How might we improve communication between the drivers and the testers to maximize the process' efficiency?

  • How might we benefit users after the test is done?

What solutions do drivers use today?

  • Consult with friends or mechanics when feeling insecure

  • They take the day off to go to the center when there are fewer cars in line

  • They pay mechanic to take the car to the test for them

There are no existing apps for managing the car test in Israel

In other countries the test is  often done by mechanics in specialized garages

Research

What do I want to accomplish in this research?

  • Identify the common pain points for drivers in this process

  • Discover how drivers currently deal with the challenges they face

  • Understand what part of the process can be treated in the solution to improve efficiency

Research methods

Observation - Interviews - Interview with a mechanic - Survey

Observations

At the test center

  • Lack of parking space causes a mess when drivers need to go register in the office

  • Testers waste time organizing the line

  • Constant noise challenges the communication between driver & tester

  • Testers are very impatient

Analysis

From pain points to objectives

Bureaucracy

Guidance

Improve communication with tester and confidence for user

  • App reminder notifications

  • Personal recommended preps for your car

  • Explanation of each fault

  • Wizard to guide through test stations

  • Expected pay for each fault

  • Navigation to the relevant garages

  • Score & reviews of garages

Long Waiting Lines

Outdated Process

Automation

Improve efficiency and reduce time waste

  • Confirm Insurance in app

  • Payments in app

  • Camera scan at the entrance

  • Notification upon arrival to center

  • Quick administration to line

Lack of Clarity

"As a foreign student who's unfamiliar with local regulations

I want to understand better where to go and what I need to do

So that I don't make any mistakes"

Judith Harosh, 24, student in TLV

"As a car enthusiast who owns multiple cars

I want to be able to keep track of all the tests I have and the required preps

So that I renew their licenses on time"

Avi Nisani, 41, Giv'ataim

"As a tester with 15 years of experience

I want to communicate easily with drivers

So that I don't tire myself yelling instructions all day"

Albert Israelov, 47, Ashkelon

  • Has a lot on his mind

  • Needs to take care of multiple cars

Goals

  • Spending a short time at the test center

  • Keeping track of all tests and their requirements
